Alumni Spotlight: Justin Russell (BA/21) – Answering the Call to be a Salvation Army Officer

Growing up a Salvationist, Justin found out about Booth University College through his local church…and it stayed on his radar.

His journey from New Brunswick to Booth UC is a unique one that began seven and a half years ago. During his first year in Winnipeg, Justin studied at Adult Education in order to obtain some courses he needed for acceptance at Booth UC. Then, he started at Booth UC in the fall of 2015 as a religion major. In 2019 Justin made the decision to switch from religion to general studies. That was also the year he began working with The Salvation Army Weetamah, running the Christmas Kettle Campaign. In 2020 he worked at The Salvation Army Winnipeg Centre of Hope. But life wasn’t all work and in February 2020 Justin married his wife, Kaitlin (BSW/20).

From the time he was 12 years old, Justin knew he had a calling to be a Salvation Army officer, and has not let anything stop him from succeeding. Together with Kaitlin, they applied to CFOT and began as cadets in the fall of 2020. Meanwhile, Justin graduated with his Bachelor of Arts, General Studies in 2021. Currently, he is looking forward to completing his final year of the officer training program, and pursuing a second degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies, at Booth UC. He is also eagerly looking ahead to commissioning in June and his first appointment.

When asked about the impact Booth UC had on him he shared, “I found going to Booth UC really helped prepare me for this time in my life. It helped me gain knowledge through education which has been very important. It also helped me grow as an individual, growing into who I am as an independent adult. It all really helped contribute to getting me where I am now.”
