Meet Helene Derksen, a Booth UC Scholarship Recipient

At Booth University College, we strive to make a high-quality education as affordable as possible through programs that recognize and reward students. We asked a few of our scholarship recipients, including Helene Derksen, about what this meant for them.

Why did you choose Booth UC?

I chose Booth UC because it offered a Social Work Program that I was interested in. Additionally, I always heard great things about the program and how the graduating social work students were well equipped and very compassionate. I like how it is a smaller university/college resulting in smaller class sizes. Also, I really appreciate that Booth UC focuses on how the Christian faith can empower its students to make positive changes in this world. For these reasons, I chose to go to Booth UC.

How does the scholarship/award you received impact your life and/or your studies?

As I continue in my social work degree, the scholarship I received will assist me in furthering my education, reducing the stress of debt, and allowing me to focus more on my academics. I am very grateful that I was able to get a scholarship that would not only support me financially but will also help me in prioritizing my academics.

How do you plan on using your “Education for a Better World”?

I plan on using my “Education for a Better World” to speak for those who can not speak for themselves and to fight for the rights of those who have none. I want to stand up for the marginalized in our society and the ones who are often looked down upon. Ultimately, in the future, I want to use my degree in social work to help abused and neglected children in our world through what I learn at Booth UC.
