No matter where you go, money is an important resource. You must be able to support yourself financially while you're in Canada. This page provides helpful information and resources to help you set up and manage your finances while you're here.

Booth UC Fees and Refunds

You may request refunds on some fees paid to Booth University College, if you meet the appropriate refund requirements. Note that most refunds must be requested within the first two weeks of the academic term.

For more help or information, contact the Booth UC Registrar.

Banking

If you plan to stay in Winnipeg for a long time, you should set up an account with a local bank to protect and access your money. There are a variety of banks and credit unions to choose from.

Find out which banks have a branch near where you will be staying and research if that bank provides services that meet your needs. You can research a bank or credit union by visiting their website or calling them to find out what services they provide (phone numbers will usually be listed on their website).

Banks also provide a debit card which allows you to access your money without having to carry it all with you.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you want to work in Canada, you will require a SIN number. You can apply for a SIN either online or in person at a Service Canada center. Here's how to apply for a SIN

Scams and Fraud

No matter where you go in the world, there is always a possibility of being scammed. This is no different in Canada. Common forms of scam are email scams and telephone scams. However, be aware that other forms of scams and fraud can occur.

Email Scams

Email scams generally come from an email address that you do not know and are not expecting to receive. However, if someone you know has had their email hacked or impersonated, emails may come from their addresses. Be sure to check where an email is coming from. Scam emails often have spelling or grammatical errors and usually encourage you to take immediate action (click a link, respond immediately with sensitive information, etc.). Do not click any links or attachments in emails that you suspect of being a scam and delete the email from your inbox.

Telephone Scams

Similar to email scams, phone scams often come from a number that you don't recognize (unless someone you know has been hacked or impersonated). These calls will also have a sense of urgency, asking you to take action or reveal personal information.

If someone is trying to get personal information from you, is asking you to act immediately with little explanation, is contacting you from an unfamiliar source that you are not expecting, then this may be a scam. Cut contact with them or ask them to verify they are who they say they are in a different way.

Example: Scammers frequently claim to be the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). The CRA provides information on how to verify if a caller is a scammer.

Taxes

In Manitoba there are two taxes that are added to the sale of most products and services (with a few exceptions). There is the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) at 7% and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 5%. If you buy something for $10, the PST will add $0.7 and the GST will add $0.5. This means you will pay $11.20 for that item.

Income Taxes

Additionally, those residing in Canada may be obligated to file their personal income taxes once per year. In Canada, the deadline for filing personal income taxes is generally the end of April. This should also be done as you may be eligible for a variety of tax breaks or benefits.
