Alumni

Booth University College takes pride in its exceptional alums who go on to bring hope, mercy and social justice to the world around them. Today, we shine the spotlight on Major William Pearce (BA/87, CCSC/19), a Booth UC alum who not only pursued his education with us twice but has now returned as a sessional instructor in the Chaplaincy & Spiritual Care certificate program.

Major Pearce's journey began in Ontario, where he was actively involved with The Salvation Army during his youth and young adulthood. It was through the influence of a fellow Booth UC student that he decided to enroll at the university in 1984. During his time at Booth UC, then known as Catherine Booth Bible College, Bill completed a Bachelor's degree in Biblical and Theological Studies.

He fondly recalls living in the Booth UC residence and fostering strong connections with fellow students. “It was a dormitory, and I really got to know the other students.  Also, I was a resident assistant for a couple of years, and I had responsibility for the well-being of other students on the floor.” Those years left an indelible mark on his life, making him reminisce fondly about the camaraderie, musicals, and even playing hockey in the frigid cold near the campus.

Pearce emphasizes that Booth UC helped him acquire essential leadership and educational skills that laid a strong foundation for his subsequent journey as a Salvation Army officer, a role he has fulfilled for an impressive 32 years. “At Booth UC I learned how to learn,” he says.

After several years, he returned to Booth UC as a mature student. This time, Major Pearce embarked on a new educational journey, pursuing a Certificate in Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care to complement his role as a chaplain. Returning to the university brought a fresh perspective and new experiences. Pearce found himself once again immersed in the vibrant academic environment, and appreciated the value of personal growth and the diversity of backgrounds among his peers.

Little did Major Pearce know that his journey with Booth UC was far from over. Shortly after completing his certificate, he was invited to become a sessional instructor for the Chaplaincy & Spiritual Care certificate program, an opportunity he eagerly embraced. For the past four years, he has guided and inspired students from across Canada and around the globe through our online platform.

To those considering attending Booth UC, particularly mature students, Bill offers words of encouragement. “My advice is to go for it and not to be afraid of the challenge of going back to university, going back to school. People who have life skills and maturity have a lot to offer.”

William Pearce's journey exemplifies the meaningful impact that Booth University College has on its students. From a young adult seeking knowledge to a seasoned sessional instructor, Pearce's connection with Booth UC has been enduring. His dedication to the mission of Education for a Better World inspires us all, and we are proud to have him as a distinguished member of our alum community.
